2 photos from Ribeira , Porto, Portugal (Around 1900)

Originally born in Porto, Portugal, there was always a personal  interest in the old photos from my city.

Nostalgy come with the years and this article represents the feeling  I'm facing.

Observe these 2 nice albumine photos with the Ponte D. Luis in the background.

Complete picture with children , parents and great parents.

Typical portuguese 1900 mens mustache with striped bathing suit. Children equipped with floating buoys for safety reasons . In 2nd photo, one man already in the water.

To realize the same photo I've decided to go on site and take a similar view.

What do you think? Probably the same place but more than 120 years later

Daguerreotype from 1845 photographed by Jean Nicolas Truchelut - My oldest one

Jean Nicolas TRUCHELUT  was earlier french photograph ,one of the disciples from Daguerre, started working with him since 1831.

This photo was taken  in 1845 and according to the text mentioned in the back, was token close to Chateauroux , in France the 23rd June 1845 during river flood of the Creuse river

Probably not in  the original frame  , I've decided to keep it, instead using   a Napoleon III  frame.

Never forget,  when you have a Daguerreotype , you have the original  picture, token in this amazing period, by a unique photographer. A UNIQUE PHOTO!

Quater plate  → 11cm X 8cm

TRUCHELUT  was an itinerant photograph  travelling all over France. Probably he was combining  the photography with family business, watch repairing. He  was original from  Hautes Vosges , not fairway from Strasbourg.

This photo freezes in the time  a typical family  with 5 personages  from this period.

Once Restored

TEXT:

“Fait le 23 Juin de 1845 , jour néfaste de la crue et débordement

de la Creuse qui a couvert une partie de la route du Blanc,

à Chateauroux et enseveli les prairies qui la bordent.

Elle est venu jusqu à ?rassurer …?

Deux gendarmes ont été sur le point de se noyer, en allons porter

du secours aux habitants des voisins de la ville”

As usual , Daguerreotype was open to  and was in high risk to become imperceptible in a few years . With a few hour , most probably is saved and will resist a few more decades. Here some steps how to proceed !

Dismounting

Need to removed the old sealing  strip

Plate stamp 30 in left down  corner
